Barium in Water

Source of Barium: Barium (Ba) is naturally found in in underground deposits primarily in Alaska, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Kentucky, Montana, Nevada, and Tennessee. Barium is used in electronic components, fireworks, glass and ceramics. Sources of barium contamination in water and soil include the discharge and disposal of drilling wastes, from the smelting of copper, and the manufacture of motor vehicle parts and accessories. In most cases barium is rendered inactive in water. Some types of barium will dissolve in water and can cause health concerns.

Health Effects of Barium: Studies show consumption of high levels of soluble barium over the short term can cause difficulties in breathing, increased blood pressure, changes in heart rhythm, stomach irritation, brain swelling, muscle weakness, and damage to the liver, kidney, heart, and spleen.

How to Remove Barium: Water softeners have proven to effective for removing barium from water supplies. The regeneration process with sodium or potassium salt (water softener salts) will remove the barium from the resin. A reverse osmosis filtration system will remove barium and other metals in drinking water by more than 98%. Contact us and we will help you choose the right WECO system for your application.
