Calcite, a naturally occurring calcium carbonate media, offers the advantage of being self-limiting. When applied correctly, it adjusts pH only to achieve a non-corrosive equilibrium, avoiding overcorrection under normal conditions. In the presence of acidic waters, Calcite slowly dissolves calcium carbonate, raising pH and reducing the potential leaching of metals like copper and lead commonly found in plumbing systems. Regular backwashing prevents packing, maintains high service rates, and reclassifies the bed. Depending on pH, water chemistry, and service flow, periodic replenishment of the Calcite bed may be necessary as it depletes. As Calcite neutralizes water and increases hardness, the use of a softener might be required after the neutralizing filter. For enhanced performance, Calcite can be effectively combined with Clack Corosex, combining the high-flow neutralization properties of Corosex with the slower-reacting low-flow properties of Calcite to better address low pH issues.
