Engineering Concept: In service (downflow), water enters the WECO control valve, flows down through the coconut shell 12×40 granular activated carbon bed, and rises up the distributor tube to the outlet. The microporous carbon adsorbs chlorine, chloramine, VOCs, THMs, solvents, taste, odor, and organic chemicals. Trapped sediment gradually raises the differential pressure (ΔP) across the bed.

Backwash (upflow) reverses the path: water travels down the distributor tube and up through the bottom screen, lifting and expanding the bed to flush trapped sediment to drain and loosen compacted carbon. Recommended frequency: municipal water every 28 days, well water every 1–3 days. Operate below 80 PSI and 110°F.
